Frequently Asked Questions
Stockport Tree Surgeons
Here are some of our most frequently asked questions and the most effective pieces of advice we could find regarding our tree services.
It is practically impossible for tree roots to actually break into drains and associated pipework. It is much easier for the roots to simply grow around it.
However, a leaking, old rusty pipe with poor joints will attract tree roots like bees to a honey nest which will then exploit the existing weakness.
Replacements of faulty drains / Pipes with modern plastic materials will eliminate the leak and stop problems from happening again.
Damage to buildings as a result of tree roots is far less common than many people believe. However, if it does occur the consequences can be serious.
Subsidence is a possibility only if the local soil is shrinkable (some clay soils shrink as they dry out).
Damage to buildings by the physical growth and expansion of roots is rare and only occurs if the tree is very close to the building (within one to two meters).
Damage to lightly loaded structures such as paths, driveways and garden walls is far more common. If a tree is growing close to a fence, it will often push the fence out of alignment. Keep an eye on this as some timely pruning can keep this in check.
Providing the tree reduction is not too drastic, if you prune a tree to keep it at a certain size, the roots will generally be kept under control.
All the branches taken from your tree are recycled. All branches up to 10 inches in diameter are chipped on site and fired straight into the back of our purpose-built truck. These wood chips are used by a power station in Chester as biofuel.
Yes, we take it all away and leave your garden super-tidy. If you want to keep wood chips or logs from your tree ask us and we can do that too. If access allows, the really big sections of the tree trunk can be carved into sculptures.
Your tree can be protected if it is covered by a Tree Preservation Order or is situated within a Conservation Area. A tree preservation order is an order made by the Council which in general makes it an offence to cut down, top, lop, uproot, wilfully damage or wilfully destroy a tree without the planning authority’s permission
